Bingley St Ives Golf Course for Robin's Diary

Bingley makes the headlines!

It’s not often my hometown of Bingley makes the headlines - the last time was probably the demise of the Bradford and Bingley Building Society!  However, when Matt Fitzpatrick, from Sheffield, won the US Open Golf at the weekend, his caddy, Billy Foster, who is from Bingley and a member at Bingley St Ives, said in his interview just after the victory that he would be having a big party there and it made me proud of my home town!

Billy has been a caddy for 40 years, and has worked with many of the best, but always just missed out- so for him it was a life’s ambition. For Matt Fitzpatrick, who by his own admission is not the most natural superstar golfer, he has succeeded thanks to hard work, commitment and dedication.

This is something we can all learn from.  Some people are just naturally gifted, many of whom don’t work as hard as they could, relying on their amazing skill.  Then there are those who have to do the work to make up for their lack of natural talent.  Both categories of people can be winners - because it is rare to find a combination of the two!

It’s a great lesson in life that you don’t have to ‘be’ the best to ‘be the best’!  You just have to work harder - but it’s there if you want it badly enough - and Matt Fitzpatrick certainly did.

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” Pele
