Robin's Diary

It’s all about cars!

I guess being in the car industry, it’s about time I actually talked cars!  There are plenty of stories about new and used cars, so this is my view!

We all know manufacturing of any kind, especially anything involving electronics, has been impacted badly by component shortages, and I suspect new car production will be adversely affected for probably another 12 months, some models worse than others.  That is just how it is.  However, placing an order now will ensure you get the car at today’s price, and, if circumstances change and you want to cancel the order, your car will simply go to the next person in line. Due to restricted new car supply, there is a shortage of used cars, as less are coming in part exchange etc, hence used car values are still substantially higher than they were a year ago, in some cases by 25 to 30%, although now prices are normalising, and normal depreciation has returned.

The challenge is that car manufacturers don’t know what they can make until they actually make them, so forward planning has virtually gone out the window because nobody knows when the components will arrive.  Shipping / transport isn’t the smooth supply chain it used to be, so we all have to be patient.

Everyone is focussed on doing their best, everyone wants to supply a customer with what they want, when they want it, and no matter how bad or grumpy it might make us, we are not dodging bombs or living in cellars!  As I realised when I was laid up for 11 months with back surgery, even when I couldn’t move, I knew there were people less fortunate than me! So I say, be thankful for what we have, not resentful for what we don’t have.
